To the CITES representatives of Europe and the US and all members of the Standing Committee:

As citizens concerned that African elephants may be extinct by 2030, we call on you to fulfill your responsibility to protect them by sanctioning Thailand for failing to stop its illegal ivory trade. With 1/10 of the population being killed each year, there is no time to lose; our elephants need champions today. The future of this magnificent species is in your hands this week -- act now.

Let's also call on the European Environment Commissioner to let him know he needs to give his staff at this week's CITES meeting a clear mandate to support strong action on Thailand's illegal ivory trade. Use the box on the right to create your own message.

Writing from your own inspiration is always best. But here are some points you could include:

  • More than 20,000 African elephants were killed for their ivory last year and at that rate they could be extinct within 15 years.
  • Thailand’s ivory market tripled in the last 18 months.
  • Thailand has made little progress with implementing its National Ivory Action Plan and changing its laws to protect elephants, according to a report by the CITES Secretariat.
  • Unless strong action including sanctions is taken now - Thailand will become a bigger and bigger market for ivory criminals and we could lose African elephants forever.
  • Please ensure that EU representatives at this week's CITES meeting sanction Thailand.
