Lula: Don’t poison the Amazon!
To President Lula and the Brazilian government:
As global citizens, we urge you to immediately stop all new oil projects affecting the Amazon, halt any approvals that are in process, and lead the way towards a global phase-out of fossil fuels with science-based deadlines. Brazil must protect the Amazon and commit to a fossil-free future — before it’s too late.

Now, Lula is pushing hard for a final green light to a ticking ecological time bomb for massive deepwater oil drilling where the Amazon River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
The area is home to 68 Indigenous communities, and countless animals and plants threatened by the climate crisis. Experts warn oil spills would be inevitable and catastrophic, because no one on Earth has the technology to contain them at such depth.
We don’t have much time to change Lula’s mind. So here’s the plan: Lula is hosting the big UN climate summit in the Amazon, where he will try to cement his legacy as a climate hero. But Indigenous people are mobilising - Avaaz will help unite the resistance across the region, and mobilise the world to expose Lula’s betrayal.
