Free Tommy

To the New York Court of Appeals, and judicial systems around the world:

As concerned citizens from around the globe we strongly urge you to grant Tommy and other animals like him non-human personhood status. Intelligent, emotional animals are not "things" -- and we urge you to let Tommy spark the change greatly needed to start classifying these incredible beings as persons who deserve rights.

Free Tommy
Tommy is a 30-year-old chimp who spends his days locked in a tiny cement and steel cage in a shed, all alone. It’s heartbreaking -- but now we could help set Tommy free and save animals like him everywhere from similar suffering.

We share 98.9% of our DNA with chimps. They laugh when they play and cry when they grieve. Like us, they find confinement and isolation unbearable.

Life in a cage is life in prison for Tommy, but a few brave lawyers have asked the courts to grant him basic rights and and force his owner to treat him humanely.

A New York court is about to hear the case, but there’s a huge risk the judge will dismiss it. But if Avaaz brings a court filing backed by a million people around the world, arguing that animals are beings deserving of basic rights, it could remind the judge this small decision for Tommy’s life could change the way we treat animals forever, everywhere.
