Every year, thousands of mothers and children around the world are confronted with judicial decisions that unjustly separate them, breaking a bond that is fundamental to their well-being and equilibrium. All too often, the justice system does not take sufficient account of the importance of this essential relationship, resulting in traumatic break-ups that could have been avoided.
We, citizens of the world, are calling for immediate reforms to ensure that the mother-child relationship is protected and preserved as a priority in all judicial and administrative decisions.OUR DEMANDS:- Ensure that the mother-child bond is upheld as a fundamental principle in all child custody and protection decisions, in accordance with international conventions.
- Avoid any unjustified separation by requiring clear and objective evidence before any decision that would deprive a child of its mother.- Establish transparent and fair legal procedures, ensuring that mothers and children are heard impartially and that independent experts – such as psychologists and child psychiatrists – are systematically involved, so as not to minimise the trauma caused by separating a child from its mother when this separation goes against the child's emotional needs and wishes. .- Create international control and appeal bodies, allowing for the re-evaluation of judicial decisions that break up families without legitimate reason.
- Harmonise international legislation to prevent differences in treatment between countries leading to arbitrary and destructive decisions for families.We call on the UN, the European Union of Human Rights, national governments and all international institutions to recognise this issue and take immediate measures to preserve the mother-child bond.
