Prime Minister of Greece Mr. Antonis Samaras, and Ministers of Environment

Greece has undergone many unfavourable developments in recent years. In one respect however the country has proven fortunate. A substantial proportion of the architecture and nature of the Greek islands has been preserved.
This has proven of particular significance during the current harsh economic depression, helping to explain why millions of tourists continue to visit the Greek islands, including many from Spain and Turkey, countries whose coastlines have been overbuilt in recent years.

The Greek islands are unquestionably one of the treasures both of Greece and of Europe. They are now to be forever degraded by a proposed new Land Planning Regulation for Tourism. The plan in question:

• Groups together and treats in the same manner villages with traditional architecture and abandoned villages, which have quite distinct characteristics.
• Encourages the building of new tourist houses without distinction in mountain, coastal and protected areas, including archaeological zones.
• Permits, and this for the first time, large-scale building on all the Greek islands, irrespective of size and without any consideration of their carrying capacity in general or the availability of necessary natural resources, such as water, in particular.
• Ignores the environmental and social cost of these proposals which will be huge and the economic consequences which are dubious as has already been proven in Turkey and Spain, which has tens of thousands of unsold tourist houses.

For all the above reasons we request the Ministry of the Environment to exclude from the draft Land Planning Regulation for Tourism islands under 130 sq.kms., archaeological sites and protected areas.

Already 28 Mayors in island areas have expressed their opposition to the form of development which the draft Regulation promotes.

Let us not forget … sometime the economic crisis will pass but whatever is destroyed today will have been destroyed forever.
