SIGN NOW! We urge the Nordic countries to align their political ambitions to create a region based on circular economy principles by 2035.

Carbon emissions can be reduced by more than 40% in the Nordics by reducing extraction, production and consumption of new materials. Applying circular principles to reduce these emissions is critical to achieve the targets of the Paris Agreement as all other climate measures are too slow.

Nordic countries are high consuming industry-dominated economies. Circularity in the Nordics is below the global average. Implementing circular flows of materials in industries, businesses and households will generate many other benefits except for the obvious reduction of emission levels. Companies can boost efficiency, profitability and create more jobs with circular business models. Societies will become more efficient and resilient with more self-sufficiency and less geopolitical dependencies by keeping resources within the region.

The interest for a circular economy is strong among both businesses and households. However, change at scale requires facilitating policies and politics. Businesses need clear directions to enable the required long-term investments to develop circular value chains. The current circular policies and ambitions of the Nordic countries are so diverse that they are incomparable. There are almost no measurable goals with clear deadlines and few actionable plans.

This is why we call on the Nordic countries to establish a shared goal to create a circular region. Finland has the most ambitious goal and has committed to base their economy on circular principles by 2035. We suggest that Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden align their ambitions with Finland.

While the expressed measurable circular goals of Finland are cautious and leave plenty of room for improvement, Finland is best in class compared to the other Nordic countries. By adopting and harmonizing clear circular policies across the Nordic region, we can improve the conditions for industries and businesses to accelerate the transition. As on all markets, unified and predictable rules generate efficiency which in turn leads to competitive advantages.

To reach net-zero carbon emissions it is critical that we reduce or eliminate material-based emissions. The Nordic countries must align their circular ambitions to reach the targets in the Paris Agreement.
