Tunisia: Free the Sumud Four, Drop All Charges, End the Detention
Global F.
started this petition to
President Kais Saied and the Tunisian judicial authorities
For nearly seven months, four Global Sumud Flotilla organizers have been held in a Tunisian prison without trial, cut off from their families and the movement they helped build.
Wael Nawar, Nabil Chennoufi, Ghassan Henchiri, and Ghassan Bougdiri organized the 2025 Sumud Convoy and played a key role in the Global Sumud Flotilla’s founding and historic launch from Sidi Bou Said port last year.
What happened
On March 6, 2026, Tunisian police began arresting the organizers on charges of money-laundering conspiracy and fraud tied to flotilla fundraising—charges that rights groups have called politically motivated and that we at Global Sumud Flotilla categorically reject. Today, three of the seven have been released under restrictive conditions, including strict mobility restrictions and a prohibition on attending public gatherings.
Four organisers remain in pre-trial detention after over 170 days in harsh conditions. At least two of them have faced serious health issues related to their detention conditions.
While Tunisia has stood with Palestine for decades, through generations of solidarity and consistent public support for Palestinian rights and self-determination, the arrest of the Sumud organisers has been a shocking decision—one that sits uneasily with this longstanding legacy and has left many questioning how such a moment could arise in a country so closely associated with support for the Palestinian cause.
That history is why we're calling on the Tunisian authorities to act now: release these organizers, drop the charges, and let them return to the work Tunisia has always courageously supported.
Our demands — We call on the Tunisian authorities to:
