Uzbekistan is about to make its first move towards nuclear power.
At a time when nations are increasingly shutting down their nuclear power plants and investing in renewable energy sources we the undersigned consider this to be a major mistake.
The security and environmental risks associated with nuclear power are both trans-national and trans-generational. It is unfair that future generations, who will grow up in a world where renewable energy will be the norm, should face the risks and financial burden of decommissioning reactors.
We therefore respectfully petition President Mirziyoyev to halt his country's nuclear energy programme an invest in renewable energy sources, and to ensure clean and safe energy for future generations in Uzbekistan and beyond.
