Not another sacrifice in Avlida.

The wider archaeological site of Avlida includes the sanctuary of Goddess Artemis and scattered archaeological ruins revealing the importance of a Mycenaeic centre as well as later and contemporary constructions which, combined with the geophysical relief of the area, compose an interesting web of a historical site with monuments from four different historical periods. The mythological tradition referring to the outset of the Trojan venture and the sacrifice of Ifigeneia on this land, as it was narrated by Homer and the masterpieces of the ancient tragedians, has given the area a universal cultural value. Avlida, unlike other areas, bears the burden and obligation of preserving a myth. It also has the privilege of keeping a special place in the global historical memory. Unfortunately, the modern history of the area was to be connected alongside the sacrifice of Ifigeneia with the sacrifice of the natural environment in the name of profit and uncontrolled development. Due to its geophysical relief , Avlida features nearby sea and road links, the bay called “Megalo Vathi”, a sheltered site ideal for installing industry facilities, and, a subsoil rich in high quality limestone suitable for preparing high quality concrete. As a result, the Mycenaeic cemetery was to turn to dust and cement . The sea was covered with cement altering the historical view of the place at the hill called “Nisi” where the sea penetrated the land, North of “Megalo Vathi” and South of “Mikro Vathi” to the sanctuary of Artemis of Avlida. The surface of the ground, the findings at the archaeological site and the bottom of the sea were covered with layers of thick cement screed. At “Megalo Vouno”, the quarrying went deep into the ground until it reached the foundation of the “Hellenistic wall.” At the bay “Megalo Vathi”, concrete piers were constructed, the coast was covered with cement while the soil and the sea were polluted with dangerous waste. The area was highly degraded due to the uncontrolled running of the industries and the greed of the leadership of the cement factory. The area has been declared an archaeological site since 1970 (Government Gazette 562/B/11.8.1970) while its boundaries and coordinates have been redefined sine 2001 (Government Gazette 1427/B/22.10.2001). However, the effort for the protection of the archaeological site had been initiated much earlier by the curator of Boiotia, Ioannis Threpsiadis, who, in 1941, excavated the sanctuary of Artemis of Avlida and, in 1956, managed to stop the quarrying at the hill “Nisi” The phrase “archaeological site of Avlida” seems to frighten some people who think it has no meaning and consider the place as a parcel of land of vague extent on the map which, from their point of view, should have never been declared an archaeological site. They support that the place is of minor cultural and archaeological interest so there has been no reason to be protected or be given prominence. The disdain of the place and the downplay of its global significance seem to have facilitated and still facilitate the well known “development plans” that have already been carried out or the ones that are going to be carried out in the area. According to the “development plans” an area with visible signs of more than four‐thousand‐year historical continuity is to be torn down so that a port will be built in its place. The port may be called “Ifigeneia.” The myth of Ifigeneia and the gathering of the ships of the Achaean οn the same coast they are about to burry under tons of cement and dangerous waste may even be mentioned on websites or in brochures. This is how some people think they serve the history of their land without considering the damage the natural surroundings and the sea will suffer because of the construction of the port and the subsequent land work. Any kind of marine archaeological construction which may lie under the layers of cement screed at the bottom of this mythical and historical sea will be destroyed. To the visitor of this declared archaeological site it is obvious that the decisions made so far regarding the development of the area have resulted in damaging the environment and degrading the archaeological site. Nevertheless, the area still brings to mind images of eternal natural beauty. The coast, the wind‐protected bays, the mountains and the hills with the rough slopes by the sea, the plains, the fertile land, the bay “Megalo Vathi” which has suffered a lot and the bay “Mikro Vathi” where there is the grove of trees leading to the sanctuary of Artemis and the drinking fountain compose the archaeological site which is in great danger. As citizens of this area we do not wish for an archaeological site adapted to the needs of an allegedly development which has destroyed a lot of archaeological treasures so far, has plundered the soil and has polluted the environment. As citizens we defend the public interest and we hope for a mild and sustainable growth of the place aiming at restoring the balance of the man and nature relationship. The preservation, the protection and the promotion of the cultural monuments and of the surroundings of Avlida is a responsibility not only of the state but also of its citizens who are fortunate enough to reside in a place whose historical and cultural value defines it as a place of international acknowledgement. Avlida should be, finally, included in the state planning related to culture. The area consists of a network of significant man‐made and natural landmarks along with a rich historical and mythical stock giving it a special dynamic and the potential for cultural and touristic development of local, hyperlocal and international scope.
