We can stop oil drilling in a whale sanctuary

To Environment Minister Hunt and CEO National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority, Stuart Smith:

We call on you to reject BP's proposal to explore for oil in the Great Australian Bight. These waters are critical breeding grounds and migration paths for Blue whales and Southern right whales. BP's disastrous track record and lack of oil spill modeling shows the severe risk Australia's oceans, tourism and fishing industries face with this project. Don't risk another Deepwater Horizon in the Great Australian Bight.

We can stop oil drilling in a whale sanctuary
BP, the company responsible for the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, wants to drill for oil in a whale breeding sanctuary! The waters south of Australia are a critical breeding ground for southern right whales. They were almost hunted to extinction, now they are making a comeback, raising their young in these protected waters. We can stop the sanctuary becoming an oil field if we act now.

In order to drill in these rough waters, BP needs sign off from obscure Australian regulator NOPSEMA this week! Independent modeling says any spill in the region could spread oil for thousands of kilometres. This decision is too important to be rushed through by a body no one has ever heard of.

Let’s overwhelm NOPSEMA with calls to reject the rig. This tiny office has never experienced a full blown global Avaaz campaign -- let’s show them what we’re capable of and save the whales that need these pristine waters. When we reach 1 million signers Avaaz will make this project as toxic for BP as it is for our oceans. Sign now.
