Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB)
Dear Ms. Lagarde,
you are the first woman to head the European Central Bank (ECB) and you are taking on this responsibility in times of the climate emergency. The ECB, together with other central banks has recently recognized that acting in the face of the climate crisis is part of your mandate.
We call upon you to implement this mandate by performing a "Climate Bailout".
The Climate Bailout should aim at achieving the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global temperature rise to less than 1.5°C and include support for:
1) additional renewable energy infrastructure and energy efficiency measures
2) phasing out stranded assets (investments in fossil fuel infrastructure that become worthless in the transition to 100% renewable energy) by buying these assets and shutting them down, while obliging the recipients to invest the money in additional renewable energy capacity.
The ECB should only hold stakes in fossil fuel companies in order to ensure a phase-out of fossil fuel burning in line with 1.5°.
