The Israeli government put a land, air and sea blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2007. Since that time, the people of Gaza have suffered collective punishment. They have no freedom of movement, there is very limited export of goods from Gaza, and the people are dependent mainly on the products allowed in from Israel. The situation has worsened since Egyptdestroyed almost all of the tunnels and cut back to a bare minimum the number of people who can leave via the Rafah crossing. The results of these actions, tied together with the harsh winter weather: skyrocketing prices, severe unemployment, serious damage to the infrastructure, despair and lack of hope, and almost complete isolation from the outside world.
