CETA is the latest in a series of proposed "new generation" free trade deals that seek to cement corporate dominance over governments and their citizens. Negotiated in secret with no public input, CETA creates vast opportunities for greater corporate control of public goods and services such as generic medicines and water utilities. Current laws ensuring protection of the environment, worker's rights and other standards would be put at risk by the "investor‐state dispute" process allowed by the agreement whereby corporations can sue governments for compensation for perceived lost profits. These suits are settled in secret tribunals that operate outside the influence of any national legal system. In addition, CETA contains a "ratchet clause" that locks in current private ownership of public services such as transit, making it impossible for governments to regain control of such services if this is in the public's best interest.

The truth is that CETA is not about creating secure jobs and strong economies for Canadians and Europeans, it is about removing the last shreds of public and government control of our economies and societies. But, just when it looked like nothing could stop CETA from being ratified, Belgium's regional government of Wallonia has stood up and opposed the deal, halting negotiations at the final hour&excl

Wallonia's courageous and inspiring stand against corporate dominance has thrown the future of this trade deal into question.

Now that we have the chance, lets let European Union President Donald Tusk and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau know that we need a more democratic trade deal that doesn't threaten our public services, environmental regulations and job security.

Please sign now and help support Wallonia's courageous stand against corporate dominance&excl
