Hassan Rouhani, Honourable President, the Islamic Republic of Iran
The award-wining Iranian filmmaker Keywan Karimi, better known in the global cinephile circuit for his short Zan va shohar Karegar (2013), has been sentenced to six years in prison and to 223 lashes for his recent project Writing on the City that concentrates on the political graffiti tradition of Iran. This is an attack on freedom of expression and a brute method of silencing a committed artist through judicial over-activism. Persecution of filmmakers in Iran has recently been able to attract the much-needed attention of the international community, primarily because of the filmmaking ban on Jafar Panahi. We sincerely hope that the Honourable President will look into the matter.
