There are more than 1 million Muslims in the Arkan State of Myanmar and have lived there for centuries. They have been designated the " most persecuted people in the world " by UN.
Since the Military rule in 1960's there have been a movement to push them out of the country. Last 5 years have been very brutal and since 2012, sectarian violence has killed hundreds if not thousands of Rohingya men, women and children and left over 140,000 homeless as entire neighborhoods have been razed to the ground and more than 5000 homes have been burnt.
In 2013, the riots spread to central Myanmar. BBC reported
"that Rohingya children were burnt alive and many of
them were filmed being brutally attacked right in front of the police". The women are raped and then either killed or kept as sex slaves. In the last quarter of 2016 we have seen an escalation of of atrocities and an United Nations official has stated "Myanmar is carrying out ‘ ethnic cleansing ’ of Rohingya Muslims”.
According to Human Rights Watch, "planned campaigns of ethnic cleansing were conducted and the government chose to ignore such crimes against humanity ". These crimes were carried out by the Mabatha and the 969 Movement of Buddhism along with RNDP activists and military forces and their acts of brutality can put the ISIS to shame.
One of their leader is Radical Buddhist Monk Ashin Wirathu who is a proponent of creation of an exclusively Buddhist state in Myanmar and must be bought to justice for promoting this genocide and ethnic cleansing of Muslims.
The state of Myanmar has defended its armed forces as well
as the Buddhist extremists, claiming that their actions against the ethnic minorities are in the best interest of the Burmese nation and even Aung San Suu Kyi, so well known for her pro‐liberty credentials, has chosen to be a mute spectator .
