The Globe and Mail, TVA, and the Munk Debates
Elizabeth May performed admirably in the Macleans debate on August 6th, receiving widespread praise from both pundits and viewers alike. Unfortunately, this may be the ONLY debate we see her in.
May is still being excluded from participation in upcoming election debates to be hosted by The Globe and Mail (Sept 17), the Munk Debates (Sept 28), and TVA (Oct 2).
Excluding Elizabeth May from the debates is anti-democratic and deeply concerning, particularly in light of the fact that Canadians want her there.
A recent EKOS poll asked Canadians whether they believe May should participate in the leaders’ debates. A whopping 81 per cent said she should be allowed in, whereas only 12 per cent felt she should be excluded.
This is even greater support for May than a previous EKOS poll which found, by a margin of nearly three to one (68 per cent to 24 per cent), Canadians felt she should be allowed in.
A Mainstreet Research poll in August found the same result: 79 per cent wanted May in the debates (only 11 per cent disapproved).
Most striking about these polls is the fact that this view is shared by Canadians of every political stripe — with majorities of each party’s supporters backing May’s participation in any 2015 federal election debates. As EKOS concluded, "The public has made up its mind; Canadians broadly see her as a strong leader and believe she should have a seat at the table."
