Last September, a University of Hawai`i- Manoa student,
Abel Pelligrino (seen in the photo above), fell to his death near the dorms; there was no response to the UH community from UHM administration. On August 16, 2015, two men fell from a dorm and one died, while the other is in critical condition. Again, no response from the administration. Instead, students found out from local television and newspaper stories, Yahoo, USA Today, and other news outlets worldwide.
Many universities have humane and practical protocols for dealing with student deaths, including suicide: Our sister school, UH-Hilo, University of California at Berkeley, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and The College of William & Mary, among others.
A university is a community. Communities need to take care of their own. As a Berkeley website puts it, "How we handle death reflects how we value people in our community. As a campus, not only do we celebrate each others' accomplishments, but we are supportive and compassionate during difficult times.”
Further, while not all deaths are self-inflicted, many of them are, so suicide prevention is critically important.
We are petitioning to request that UHM develop compassionate and reasonable protocols for dealing
with campus deaths, to better advertise available mental health resources, and to mount suicide prevention activities.
*The petition will be taken down on Monday, August 31, at 8:45 and sent to UH administration and the Board of Regents.*
