Call for Dalhousie University to freeze grades and end the semester

This petition calls for Dalhousie University to freeze current grades and allow students to opt-in to the rest of the semester if they wish to improve their grades. If a student is happy with their current grade, let that be their final grade. If a student wants to complete further assessments to improve their grade, let them choose to do that. The sudden switch to isolated, online learning has harmed students’ mental health and their ability to maintain a high standard of work. The ever-changing nature of assessments, curriculums and learning platforms has been at best overwhelming. One day we have a paper due next week; the next day this assessment is cancelled and we no longer have to do it. The learning environment is unstable. On top of this, students are no longer on an even playing field. Some students have been forced to go home to their families, where quiet study spaces can be impossible. Others are forced to endure the mental load of isolation away from their friends and family. Some have access to internet and study materials; others are concerned about whether they can afford groceries for dinner after losing their jobs.
We call on Dalhousie University to freeze current grades and prioritize the mental wellbeing of students. Allow us to opt-in if we seek to improve our grades, but do not force us to choose between mental health and academic success. For the sake of our wellbeing, this must be done.
