We, the undersigned, call on the Tbilisi City Assembly, Tbilisi City Council and the so-called “Tbilisi Architecture” Department of Construction not to construct of a planned seven storey hotel in the southern part of the Vake Park, one of the central and key recreational areas of Tbilisi! As of January 2014, a substantial amount of trees have already been cut down to accommodate the building project, however we call on the local authorities to abort the construction of the building immediately and reconsider the importance of the green area protection in the rapidly growing capital of Georgia.

The planned construction will have devastating environmental impact on the life of the city and its citizens. This would further exacerbate the current environmental problems caused by heavy construction that has been taking place in the past decade, with the per capita green area in Tbilisi falling to 5 square meters this year. According to the city regulations, 11 square meters of green trees and plants are required to absorb the dioxide carbon volume exhaled by one person, in 1980’s the ratio in Tbilisi was 13 square meters. To compare, Berlin and Moscow can boast 50 and 44 square meters per capita respectively.

Much of the green area of existing parks of Tbilisi has already been sacrificed, as it was stripped of its recreational status and sold to private businesses by the City Council in order to build restaurants, apartment buildings and hotels. This is the case with the “Tsikvebi” area of the nearby “Ku” or Turtle Lake are where a restaurant is being constructed in place of a rich green space that attracted local squirrels.

We, the undersigned, wish to bring to the international attention the abuses of the green areas of Tbilisi and generally Georgia by the local authorities that strip local parks of recreational area status and sell land to private businesses at the expense of the environment. We call on the Tbilisi City Assembly, Tbilisi City Council and the so-called “Tbilisi Architecture” Department of Construction to stop abusing their authority and issuing permissions to building projects that brings about an irreparable harm to the eco-system of Tbilisi and the health of its citizens.
