Ebola: Have Mercy and Drop the Debt
World Bank President Dr. Jim Yong Kim, US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble and other world leaders :
We call on you to cancel all debt held by international lenders against Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia to allow them to spend every dollar on health care, education and other essential services and infrastructure in the midst of this deadly Ebola outbreak. Canceling all debt will allow these countries to invest their resources for years to come in their people, not their loan payments.

We can win this. After the Haiti earthquake, the World Bank and other key lenders forgave its debt. Officials in several countries have shown interest in doing a bit of this for Sierra Leone and Liberia. But to really have mercy on these suffering countries, we need to forgive their full debt of almost $3 billion dollars-- and the World Bank and other lenders are unlikely to do that without public and political pressure.
A few key treasury secretaries (from the US and Germany) and the President of the World Bank are going to be deciding where they stand on this in the next several days. As they go on vacation with their families, let's create a massive petition and advertise it in local papers where they're traveling. If our call is big enough, we can inspire them to bring some of their holiday spirit, or at least some basic human mercy, to those less lucky this season.
