Stop female genital cutting in Egypt

To Grand Imam Ahmad el-Tayyeb and Pope Tawadros II:

In the wake of the death of 13 year old Sohair el-Batea, we urge you to release public statements denouncing the cruel practice of female genital cutting. Millions of Egyptians look to you for guidance -- we urge you to use your influence to save Egyptian girls.

Stop female genital cutting in Egypt
This month, 13-year-old Sohair el-Batea died in an illegal genital cutting procedure administered by a doctor. Thousands of parents unknowingly put their daughters at huge risk with these procedures, but we can help stop it.

Although Female Genital Cutting (FGC) is illegal, many Muslims and Christians believe it is religiously mandated. However, Al Azhar University and the Coptic Church say it isn’t. If we act now, we can get the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Ahmad el-Tayyeb, and Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria, to speak out against this dangerous practice.

Let’s call on them to use their moral authority to show believers FGC has no basis in religion. Click below to sign the petition and when we reach 10,000, we’ll deliver our voices directly to their offices. Once they agree, Avaaz will spread their message through radio ads in Egypt’s most affected areas.
