The Global Climate March

Event Reports

We made a hand held spiral of lights, joining with fellow Canadians to affirm our desires to protect the planet, advocate to change government polices to decrease greenhouse gases/decrease global warming. It was a fun atmosphere of solidarity.

The To climate march was lovely - mostly native speakers followed by marching in the Queens Park areas north and south of the Legislature and the forming of linked chains of people - most marchers brought innovative or ordinary lights and lovely native drum bands provided a powerful not overly incessant encouragement to dance and committ. People drifting off into the night - somehow it seemed that we were in a true park beseeching wisdom where danger prevails. ( oh well - you get the message - lovely march with many oldsters, many families with smalls, and many young couples, and many dispossessed of the city all together.) It only lasted for about an hour plus a bit.

Lighits . Circle walking. Not overly hyped march. I felt happy and proud, but a bit lonely because I was there on my own. But surrounded by so much good will I really felt I was with friends. Spoke with a very nice man from a church group in Toronto. Spoke with others carrying signs promoting their own environmental/climate projects. Loved the drumming and the march. Was very glad the weather cooperated. Hope to attend other events in future and will try to bring friends.

From Toronto to Paris: Light the Way to Climate Action was held at Queens Park in downtown Toronto with an estimated 3,000 in attendance. The event was opened by Crystal Sinclair and other members of Idle No More Toronto who sang a water song. A moment of silence was held for those who lost their lives in Paris and others around the world who have lost their lives due to the impacts of climate change. The crowd called upon Prime Minister Trudeau to commit to 100% clean energy by 2050. The solar-powered People's Climate Torch was lit and passed hand-to-hand by young climate leaders saying the words "we have wisdom, courage, commitment." A parade of lights was led by Idle No More Toronto, which ended in a circle dance to the music of Afro-Brazilian percussion group Baque de Bamba.

What will happen at the event?

We will have a short opening ceremony and a parade of lights to music. So please bring your own light - your cell phone, flashlight or something creative - and dress warmly. Please join the FB event:
