Let's Open the Fence of Shame

To Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras and President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz:

As global citizens, we call on you to open the fence at the Evros border in the memory of all the children who have drowned in the Aegean Sea. By creating a safe, legal, and controlled route to the EU, you can save lives and end the tragedy. This is a chance to put your words into action, creating an example of true humanity in the heart of Europe.

Let's Open the Fence of Shame
Dozens of children have drowned just in the last few days, and the wrecks will only increase as the winter weather gets worse. One volunteer on the Greek island of Lesbos describes “lines of refugee children half dead waiting to be hung upside down so we can pound the water out of their tiny lungs”. But this week we could get agreement on a simple solution that could save thousands of lives.

An impenetrable fence along the Greece’s border with Turkey forces refugee families to gamble with the wintry waves, risking everything in deadly boats. The Greek government has said it would consider opening the fence if the EU and Turkey agree to collaborate.

This would create a safe, legal and controlled passage over land and end the drownings.

This week, Greek PM A. Tsipras and President of the EU Parliament M. Schulz are visiting Lesbos and Avaaz members will meet them on the ground in front of the world’s media. If we create an unprecedented global outcry we can make them listen.

Sign the urgent petition to open the fence and save thousands of lives now.
