UN Secretary General: Save Madaya from starvation

To UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura, Presidents Rouhani and Erdogan, and other state and non-state leaders:

As citizens from around the world, we are truly horrified by the intentional use of starvation as a tool of war and punishment against the civilian population of Madaya. We call on you to do everything in your power to lift the siege on Madaya and towns across Syria, and redouble your diplomatic efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace. Our community will not remain silent in the face of mass starvation and other atrocities. The power to save countless lives is in your hands.

UN Secretary General: Save Madaya from starvation
Mothers are being forced to feed their children leaves and cats in Madaya, Syria because the regime is actively starving out 40,000 residents to drive them from their homes and take over the town. When a pregnant woman and her daughter tried to leave this week, she stepped on a land mine. The town is surrounded. There is no escape.

But it’s totally possible to lift this shocking siege. In September the UN brokered a ceasefire between the warring parties in neighbouring towns to let wounded fighters out. If enough of us demand it now, they can get this inhumane and illegal siege totally lifted so families can get food and medicine in, and leave.

Our staff have a direct line into the UN Secretary General’s office and key governments who can broker a ceasefire. But to get their attention our community has to show that this is a global public priority, and that in Ban Ki Moon’s last year of office his legacy will be measured by whether he did everything in his power to stop these humanitarian crimes.

Join the urgent call to save these families.
