Canada: No more drownings!

To Prime Minister Harper, and the Government of Canada:

We, as Canadians, call on you to give our country a humane 21st century global refugee policy that saves lives and protects the people fleeing war and hunger. We urge you to immediately and substantially increase the number of refugees to be resettled and relocated in Canada, in particular those fleeing the war in Syria, and help prevent more tragedy.

Canada: No more drownings!

This image of a tiny baby lying lifeless on the shore is too heartbreaking to watch. And now news has broken that his family had been hoping to find refuge in Canada -- but a relative hadn't been able to finish the lengthy sponsorship application process in time to save his life.

As German Chancellor Merkel leads efforts to deliver a new, strong EU plan that would give refuge to people fleeing war and hunger, Canada's leaders are spinning their wheels and doing nothing -- just the latest consequence of the current government's slashing of our refugee program.

This isn't about election promises for months down the line. This moment demands action – NOW. Whether Canada’s politicians join the world by agreeing to a humane 21st century refugee plan, or throw up roadblocks or turn their backs, depends on how much they feel the public demands it -- especially in an election period.

It’s time for us to lead our leaders. Canada should welcome these terrified families, immediately, and give them the safe haven they seek -- and return to being the compassionate country we used to be. Join the urgent call, then share on Facebook, Twitter, email… everywhere.
