We have an opportunity to present this petition to Auckland Council in September. Lets try and get to 10,000 signatures by the end of August. Thanks for your support

To Auckland Council: Cats are not pests! Do not kill cats ‐ with or without a microchip!

The Auckland Council’s Proposed Regional Pest Management Plan for 2018 ‐2028 intends to classify cats as pests if they are not wearing a functioning, NZCAR registered micro‐chip. Pest animals are killed by councils. This is the council definition of the cats it would deem pests (copied from the tiny print in its plan):

Pest cat means any cat within the Hauraki Gulf Controlled Area that is not:
i. Micro‐chipped; and [not]
ii. Registered on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register.

Micro‐chipping has proven to be very unreliable. Last month Virbac released a statement that over 15,000 of its microchips are faulty. A micro‐chip that works today might fail tomorrow with lethal consequences for cats who wander near an ‘ecologically sensitive’ area – which could be your neighbourhood park.

Rodents are pests. Rats are the worst predators of birds. Cats provide people and birds with excellent service by keeping rodents down very effectively ‐ especially at night.

1080 poisoning and housing developments thoughtlessly built in native wildlife habitats cause mass destruction of native birds and entire ecosystems ‐ including trees and food sources for any surviving native birds ‐ especially when large numbers of mature trees are felled during nesting seasons in spring and summer.

No Council in NZ has the legal power to create bylaws for wildlife protection.

Cats need your help and support right now to stop this cruel proposal from being passed by Auckland Council. If it is passed, other councils around the country are likely to adopt the same policies.

Thank you for signing and sharing this petition.
