Thousands of marine lives are lost. Two dolphin and porpoise species are on the brink of extinction including New Zealand's Mau and Hector's Dolphins as well as the Vaquita living in the Gulf of California.
Dr. Naomi A. Rose, senior scientist at Humane Society International, tells TakePart. “If the gillnets were gone, the vaquita would almost certainly recover.”
With only 50 Maui Dolphins left their future is extremely threatened with extinction because of gillnets.
In the Pacific Ocean off California’s coast, mile-long driftnets are used to capture swordfish and thresher sharks. But that’s not all they catch. When the nets are deployed in the evenings to soak overnight to ensnare their targeted catch, they also entangle large open ocean travelers like whales. Thousands of seaturtles die in gillnets each year.
The Sea Turtle Restauration Project writes following: Last summer a horrific 600% increase in dead sea turtles was observed in Gulf of Ulloa along Baja's Pacific coast, an area famous for its friendly gray whales and an important eco-tourism destination. A stunning 483 loggerheads washed up dead on 40 km of shoreline in just the month of July, and scientists estimate over 2,000 loggerheads were killed last year in gillnets alone off of Baja's coast.
