The deadline for the decision to log has passed. We now wait, and hope that the Lapoinya forest has been reprieved. However, the decision rests with the two men listed below.

Pls help us by emailing the Minister for Resources, The Honourable Paul Harriss MP
Paul.Harriss@dpac.tas.gov.au

and/or Bob Annells, Chair, Forestry Tasmania

Undoubtedly, the pressure you apply will help delay the decision and can even stop the logging. Forestry Tasmania is currently in dire political trouble with a need for continued government subsidies. However, they just want to continue raking in their salaries on the back of destroyed native forests. Meanwhile the Tasmanian health and education systems have had to undergo severe cutbacks.

We have a valid alternative to this destruction in Tasmania - tourism. And tourism will be throttled at birth if our beautiful flora continues to be destroyed, because believe it or not, travellers do not want to visit places that look like WWI battlefields.

I also encourage you to see the movie "Two Visions"

Not a lot has changed since the ten years ago that this movie was made. Our native forests are still being destroyed.

The Lapoinya 68 hectare forest is a vital wildlife corridor amidst sterile plantations and clear felled areas. The biodiversity of Lapoinya is phenomenal with disease-free Tasmanian Devils, Spotted Tail Quolls, fresh water lobsters, orchids and 27 bird species.

Forestry Tasmania want to destroy this area. An economist has projected that the logging of Lapoinya will put Forestry Tasmania a further $215,000 into debt. Over half the estimated tonnage will be processed into wood chips for which there is a declining market at a loss of $37/tonne.

The burning of the residue which is achieved by helicopters dropping ping pong balls of napalm, will emit up to 700 tons of CO² per hectare.

Forestry Tasmania and politicians met with residents and experts on Friday 13th Feb when they said the decision to log had not yet been made, however, an article in a local newspaper published before the meeting states, "A Forestry Tasmania spokeswoman said 35.7 hectares of the forest would be ‘‘harvested’’, despite the meeting".

If true (and the jounalist stands by his source), this is a blatant deception of the community who are already grieving for the potential loss of their 'backyard'.

The world's largest freshwater crayfish Astacopsis gouldi is DIRECTLY threatened by this clear fell and NW Tas is its ONLY global habitat. Are we going to let these environmental vandals rape our future heritage?

Tell them your feelings regarding how Lapoinya will look, as in this picture, after logging. A short email is fine, say whatever comes to your heart because to clear fell this forest would be heartless.
