Borneo Government
Deforestation is continuing at an alarming daily rate in Borneo in the main due to the external demand for palm oil. As the area of forest has halved over recent years, the population of orangutans has also halved. Orangutans are tree dwelling apes and cannot survive without large areas of forest. Many orangutans are orphaned at an early age; often witnessing the brutal slaying of their mothers with machetes, as the machinery of forest destruction advances. Some orphans are taken into captivity in terrible conditions. Consequently, they become traumatised and often die. Others are taken into the rehabilitation centres, all of which are run privately and must rely on funding from charities and tourism. If the deforestation is not stopped, the Borneo orangutan population will not exist in less than ten years form now. These are intelligent and socially complex creatures and must be saved. The solution is for the government in Borneo to protect areas of forest that can be designated wild life sanctuaries; in particular for the orangutan but also for many other tree dwelling species. It is possible for the palm oil industry to exist alongside preserved forest for wildlife, with proper control and planning. I therefore call on the government of Borneo to recognize that they are losing a major species in their own country and to take immediate action to protect them for future generations by creating large areas of protected forest where orangutans can live undisturbed. Any future change of forest to agriculture must be planned and allow for the movement of orangutans and other large forest creatures ahead of the bulldozers. Lets insure that these wonderful animals are not consigned to text books for future generations.
