CEO of the South African Poultry Association, Kevin Lovell

As consumers and supporters of Compassion in World Farming (SA), we petition the CEO of the South African Poultry Association, Kevin Lovell, please to give a timeline for a phase-out of the cruel battery cage for laying hens in this country.

This is a view of laying hens from beneath their battery cages. These particular hens supply eggs to one of South Africa's major supermarket
chains.

24 million laying hens are trapped in battery cages like this, all around South Africa. They stand on wire like this, virtually on the same spot, for two years before they are considered 'spent' and sent to slaughter.

Their discomfort, frustration and torment is relentless and without respite.

Pick n Pay, Spar and Shoprite Checkers continue to turn a deaf ear to consumer appeals for a phase out of battery cages. The South African Poultry Association too, continues to turn a deaf ear and ignore consumer appeals, as does the Department of Agriculture.

Barren battery cages are already banned throughout the EU and some states in the USA.

Now India has vociferously joined in the call for a ban on battery cages.

Please sign this petition on behalf of the 24 million laying hens trapped in battery cages in South Africa and send it on to friends and family.
