Dog Breeding
Manifesto for ethical practices

ABSTRACT:
I've created an association: CANIS ETHICA, in order to have ethics introduced in dog breeding practices in France. Since our French Kennel Club (SCC) is having its statutes updated this year (last update was in 1952) I am asking for it to introduce in them Universal ethics aims such as: dog's welfare, cruelty prevention and genetic variability preservation. You can read it all on my website: www.canisethica.org all pages can be translated in any languages thanks to the web app on each page.
All countries are concerned by The way breeds are (mis)treated in another country for the amount of founders won't move neither will we slow the genetic diseases high rate without collaboration.

If you agree that it is time for unnecessary dog suffering to stop whilst having some breeding practices improved in France then please sign my petition and forward it to as MANY dog lovers who respect Life as you can. Many thanks in advance. Love.

Context

If the dog is integrated within thousands of French families, and if in general the relationship is mutually beneficial, one must not overshadow the difficult situations where the dog, often sick and weakened suffers avoidable suffering.
His discomfort affects his owners, who pay the price. Indeed, as they cannot stand to see him suffer, with shorter lifespan and in poor health.

Facing this observation Canis Ethica calls for responsibility of the Société Centrale Canine (French Kennel Club) diligently so that it starts the necessary arrangements for the benefit of the Dog: Integrate into its constitution the fundamental concepts of well-being, safeguarding the
genetic heritage and prevention of cruelty to the dog within breeding practices, based as much on legal advances in the field (see Rural Code, Penal Code and Civil Code) than on scientific, societal, cultural and, of course, ethical.

I. What we want
Canis Ethica aspires to a society where health and well-being of the Dog report to ethics.
Canis Ethica aspires to a society where the French Kennel Club (SCC) as the French Authorities will not only mobilize to relieve but to eradicate certain breeding practices at the origin of the dog suffering.

II. How?

1. Stéphane LE FOLL, French Minister of Agriculture pledged in January 2015 to make animal welfare a key component of its policy. Opportunity calendars: the Société Centrale Canine (SCC _ French Kennel Club), Dog body responsible in France, which is preparing to amend its articles dating back to 1952, has submitted the project to the office of the Minister for approval ( pending ).

2. Canis
Ethica request:
- To Minister of Agriculture to subordinate its opinion to a project update statuses ethically
- And the Kennel Club in its statutes to integrate the basic ethical concepts of animal welfare, the preservation of genetic heritage, prevention of cruelty in some breeding practices

The Kennel Club has to implement ethical measures (see section IV), it alone (in the framework of the delegation received from the government) has the power to
establish in our country, to prevent and better, eradicate breeding practices that keep the dog in a state of malaise condemning to disease and suffering.

III. The current situation

1. Breed Clubs are the secular arm of the Société Centrale Canine (SCC_French Kennel Club). Their mission is to regulate the breeding. However, today in France, 3 out of 4 dogs breeders no longer adhere to the Clubs, raising dogs apart from all directions.

2. Good dog breeders that form (at their expense) are a minority. Thus, wrong assessments of bad breeders condemn the health, well-being and longevity of dogs so that these practices have a direct impact on the evolution of the breeds concerned

IV. Consequently

Canis Ethica request solemnly and publicly to the French Kennel Club to end the following practices:
• Recording litters of bitches who
o have already whelped 4 times
o are not fully grown
o are 8 years old at the time of mating
o have had two c-section already
• Recording litters of puppies coming from inbreeding matings: mother/son, father/daughter, brother/sister
• The lack of condemning of free and unjustified euthanasia/culling of healthy puppies
• Printing 3 generations only pedigrees
• The refusal to set a maximum number of mating per stud per year over the breed population
• The absence of a requirement of a canine genetics course for any dog breeder
• The lack of mention on each pedigree of inbreeding coefficients (AVK and COI)
• No indication of proof of parentage by DNA test before recording (to prevent false declarations of births with substitution puppies from other countries)
• Lack of implementation of a national database allowing breeders to find mates that will lead to genetic stabilization of the breed.

V. Guidance

1. A speech
is not enough, the writing must consolidate it. A solid framework guided by clear general principles, defining acceptable practices in dog breeding in France given the general impoverishment of polygenicity in canine breeds, is a
necessity to deal with the health crisis.
2. The articles of the French Kennel Club (Société Centrale Canine) are like a constitution that determines the rights of the Dog.
3. Canis Ethica calls for priority to canine welfare and ethical breeding practices, with ounces of humanity.

VI. Who is Canis Ethica?

It is an association which aim to advance ethical dog breeding practices in France. It was born from the will of its founder, very involved in the breeding dog world since 1998 in France and abroad, and affection that members have for their dogs.

Documentary

http://www.dailymotion.com/playlist/x43oui_canisethica_video/1#video=xl4n4s
Shot in 2008 (UK) by Mrs. Jemima Harrison for the BBC. On many aspects it reflects the state of the dog breeding practices in France in 2015. As "early" as 2009, following
this documentary, the Kennel Club (UK) has taken steps (partly those we now want to see evolve in France) to preserve the Dog from unethical breeding practices
which creates suffering and unnecessary disabilities.
