Dublin City Council
In 2014 Dublin City Council used 34580 litres of herbicide on city playgrounds, parks and streets. These are the playgrounds where our children play, Footpaths and streets not only are used as transitory routes in the city but also by children as play areas.Mounting scientific evidence from organisations such as the World Health Organisation has labelled herbicides as dangerous not only to human health but also deadly to pollinating insects on which we so depend.          Science tells us that the effectiveness of chemical spraying diminishes with each successive use, thus making weeds resistant. This creates a vicious circle which then involves the use of stronger chemicals to stop weeds compounding the problem.
Spraying of weeds does not remove the problem as you have not removed the weed only killed it. The molecules of spray attach to the plant debris/soil are then washed into water courses causing further pollution problems for aquatic life. Our science is strong.
It is our duty as parents to protect the health of our children from these deadly herbicides.
We the undersigned are calling on DCC to immediately stop their use of these deadly chemicals on our streets and in areas where our children and youth play.
