NUBIAN JAK, BARRATT HOMES, HACKNEY COUNCIL, ENGLISH HERITAGE
.
This
petition is seeking recognition of a recreational venue for African Caribbean
people living in Britain during the harsh years of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.
Hackney Council demolished this listed building in 2007 - they claimed
accidentally (also saying:
"it has no historical value”), but it can be seen as a corollary of
“ethnic cleansing” in the borough. They have not considered any measure of
restitution that might show a sign of repentance for their blunder. A
£4.4million construction has since been built on the site.
The Four Aces – based at 12 Dalston Lane,
[DALSTON JUNCTION] Hackney, London E8 – it was a legendary club that ran for
more than three decades, famed for its celebration of African-Caribbean Reggae,
Roots, Soul and R&B. As its reputation spread, it attracted a host of
notable African-Caribbean/American and progressive white stars. Among those who played
the venue were Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Toots and the Maytals, The Ethiopians, The
Ronettes, Jimmy Ruffin, Ben E. King, Bob Dylan visited the venue during his 1978 world tour.and as well as attracting a dedicated
local audience the likes of Bob Marley hung out at the Four Aces. The
club later became the essential rave centre Labrynth, continuing into the ‘90s.
It was a crucial hub from which East London’s modern music scene evolved and
deserves to be commemorated.
