Fishing is in distress without fish!
Baltic fish stocks are already in dire straights. On 22 October, ignoring scientific advice, the European Commission and Council have set excessive total allowable catch (TAC) limits for the Baltic for 2016. TACs were set so high that a speedy recovery (if any) of the mostly depleted Baltic stocks will not be possible. Examples:

  • Western Baltic cod , which is severely depleted, is allowed to be fished at more than twice the maximum sustainable level for a healthy stock.
  • Sprat , the main food for cod and other Baltic predators, will be fished above the maximum sustainable level.
  • Western Baltic herring , which still has to recover from long overfishing, will be subject to fishing as if it were in good shape.

  • Right now there is a chance to rectify the wrong. The European Parliament, Council and Commission are negotiating a long-term management plan for the Baltic.
Independent scientists have recommended management measures for European fisheries for high sustainable yields: http://www.fishsec.org/2015/11/09/scientists-criticise-eu-for-setting-fishing-limits-above-fmsy/

Ask the MEPs and public officials to follow the scientific advice in the management plan.
Ask them to respect existing legislation that makes overfishing illegal .

Healthy stocks and a resilient Baltic ecosystem are essential for professional and recreational fishers, for sustained food supply and the caring public, who don't want tax Euros squandered by mismanagement.

    Let's achieve this together!
