European Parliament : Free access to public museums for everyone in the European Union

Most public museums in the European Union are not free
for everybody. In theory, museums are places for lifelong learning which
support intercultural competences and promote social discourses about the past,
the future and the present. They are a form of independent education for
everybody and this should be realized in practice. In addition, public museums
are maintained with taxpayers’ money and we end up paying twice for access to education.

With this petition we ask the European Parliament to adopt legislation that
will allow:

 - free entrance for every EU citizen to permanent
exhibitions in public museums in all Member States
- free entrance for every EU citizen to temporary exhibitions
in public museums once a month in all Member States

If implemented, this proposal will contribute to a more
informed and more educated public throughout the EU. Public museums would
benefit from an increase in the number of visitors: these will spend more money
in the museum shops and cafés and return for temporary exhibitions.
