Fracking is about to descend on the UK like nothing we've ever seen. Our own Prime Minister has said that he will do EVERYTHING in his power to make it happen.
The process involves drilling thousands of metres into the ground, first vertically, then horizontally. Millions of gallons of water and toxic chemicals are then pumped at high pressure into the well. The product of this process is gas. But what of the byproducts?
We know that the technology is in its infancy. We know that it is self regulated, often badly. We know that whole communities in the USA have had their water irreversibly contaminated, their farmlands destroyed and their air filled with methane that can literally be seen bubbling out of entire fields when it rains.
Fracking wells are made of cement and concrete, neither of which will hold indefinitely. They will ALL break eventually. When they do, the water dies, and methane leaks steadily into the air, colourless, odourless. Our bodies are 70% water. We quickly die without it. Being one of the most virulent of greenhouse gasses, constant exposure to methane cause dementia and death. Can you imagine if the the average age of dementia sufferers was 45?
We know that the Crown owns the mineral rights under our homes. We know that fracking companies are attempting to use this to drill under our homes without informing us. No new law has been passed yet to make it so, but it is coming.
