Every day, diarrhoea kills 4,000 children around the world. In Africa, it is the leading killer of children under 5 years old, causing more deaths than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.

“Sanitation” or access to and use of a hygienic toilet, has been regarded as the most important medical advancement since the 1800s. Despite the known importance of sanitation, 2.5 billion people worldwide still do not have access to a decent toilet and just over 1 billion people defecate in the open.

For every €1 invested in sanitation there is a €5 return making sanitation interventions some of the most cost effective. However, sanitation has languished at the bottom of the international development agenda for far too long. This unacceptable situation must change NOW!
