Ruthie, now 55 years old, and Emily, 48, spent over half their lives in a 2,500-square-foot concrete barn, often chained in place, for the last 26 years. Both exhibit aggression and stereotypical behavior caused by years of being in a small 12,567-square-foot exhibit without the ability to graze, roam or perform other natural activities that elephants need to thrive. In the winter, there isn't even a blade of grass in the yard and nothing for them to do but stand there.

Compare this to the rich natural environment found at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, with 2,700 acres of woodland, fields and streams. Even in February, the temperatures are in the 70s. Ruth and Emily would also benefit from having social interactions with the other elderly Asian elephants who already made it to this safe haven.

The zoo has already made the tough decision — when one of the elephants passes away, the other will be sent to a zoo or a sanctuary. They already decided that they won't replace them — it's too small an area and it's too cold a climate.

So why wait?

Please go to their facebook page for more information. Send Ruth and Emily to the Elephant Sanctuary.
