Justin Trudeau, please Repeal Bill 38.

Bill 38 has placed the protection of Canadian lakes, rivers and streams in the hands of provincial authorities.

These bodies of water cross provincial boundaries and Bill 38 has stripped environmental authorities such as DFO of their power to intercede.

What is happening in Shawnigan Lake, BC is a perfect example of situations that are now occurring across Canada as a consequence of the Harper government's move to remove environmental restrictions on industry.

In BC, the Ministry of Environment has approved a contaminated soil permit to South Island Resource Management (formerly South Island Aggregate or SIA) to dump and store 5 million tons of contaminated soil in the headwaters of Shawnigan Lake. Shawnigan provides water to over 12,000 people and Shawnigan Creek is home to Pacific Coho Salmon and other wildlife that need protecting under the Fisheries Act.
