Zeynab Jalalian is a Kurdish woman from Northwestern Iran, sentenced to death in early 2009, after having been imprisoned for eight months. She was accused of "mohareb" - enmity against God - a charge often used against those accused of armed rebellion. Zeynab was alleged to be a member of a Kurdish opposition party, and to have supported and recruited members to it. Her death sentence was subsequently converted to life imprisonment. Her trial is said to have been very inadequate. Allegedly, she was not allowed access to a lawyer and the trial lasted only a few minutes. According to her own testimony, she has also been subjected to torture during her imprisonment.

According to an international report written by Amnesty International, Iranian prisoners’ "confessions" extracted under torture or ill-treatment are used as evidence during their trials. Join us in our continuing struggle to give Zeynab Jalalian a fair trial, freedom from torture and, more acutely, proper medical care. Zeynab’s time in prison has put her in a critical state of physical and mental health according to information from her lawyer.
