Mayor Michael Fougere and his Regina Council
The City of Regina announced late Friday that, because of budget cuts, it is planning to approve the closing of the last remaining major lawn bowls club in Regina, at their Council meeting Monday evening. Without prior notice, the City asked for submissions from the club by Monday 10 am, knowing full‐well that the clubs key executives are in transit from abroad. The savings are a paltry &dollar65,000 per year, of which the Leslie Club already pays half. Sneaky and unfair. All lawn bowlers and the world community need to protest such an abuse of power. The Leslie Lawn Bowling Club is a very successful, 105 years old club. It is one of only 3 clubs in Canada with 4 greens, able to host National Championships. It has produced some of the very best lawn bowlers in Canada, both men and women. Even Hall of Famers. Several of its members are on the National team. Closing this club without replacing it is totally unconscionable.Rumor has it that the City wants to turn it into a parking lot to support the new Mosaic Canadian Football Stadium next door. If so, Mosaic can pay for the relocation and its maintenance for the next 20 years. Otherwise, here are some other solutions.
1 . If necessary, let the Leslie Club pay the entire amount for maintenance. It’s a small increase, they already pay half.
2 . Since the City also wants to sell the adjacent golf club, perhaps an amalgamation might work. New greens will cost approx. &dollar500,000 each. A new clubhouse may be required. It should have an indoor green and a restaurant/pub. The sale of the current club would easily pay for it.
3 . Relocate the entire Leslie complex. Include an indoor club with restaurant/pub and make it a well‐deserved Centre of Excellence for Lawn Bowls in Saskatchewan.
