Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil: Protect Nova Scotia Honey Bees and beekeepers from new threats!

The
Nova Scotia
beekeeping industry is facing new threats
by the government's decision to import unnecessary Honey Bee colonies from Ontario.
The Nova Scotia Government will issue an import permit for Ontario bees to be trucked to Nova Scotia for crop pollination. This could cause 2 significant new problems for Nova Scotia beekeepers.
1. Nova Scotia beekeepers operate enough hives to provide pollination for all the blueberry growers in 2017. Nova Scotia hives, paid for in part by the Pollination Expansion Program to ensure Nova Scotia has enough bees for crop pollination, will go unrented to make way for hives from Ontario. Nova Scotia beekeepers are therefore losing the rental income that they purposely expanded to fulfill .
2. Furthermore, Ontario hives could bring a significant new health issue to Nova Scotia bees. Ontario is the only province with an established population of Small Hive Beetle ‐ a major hive pest that stresses honey bees and slimes the honey, rendering it inedible. The rest of Canada is Small Hive Beetle free.
It is imperative that the Nova Scotia Government act to prevent this significant Honey Bee pest from being introduced to our province&excl All honey producers in Nova Scotia, commercial and hobby‐level, would be negatively impacted by Small Hive Beetle.
Nova Scotia Minister of Agriculture, Honorable Keith Colwell, please cancel existing permits allowing Honey Bees from Ontario to fill pollination contracts in Nova Scotia, and cease to issue new ones.
Beekeeping is challenging enough, as it is. Please protect Nova Scotia Honey Bees and the Beekeeping Industry from these new disease and economic threats.
