Uphold the Maui citizens initiative for a moratorium on GMOs and Open Air Chemical Testing until environmental impact studies are done….

Hawaii is ground zero for the biotechnology industry’s outdoor experimentation of pesticide-promoting plants that are genetically engineered to withstand heavy spraying of toxic chemicals. Chemical companies like Monsanto and Dow have purchased prime agricultural land on the islands, taking advantage of Maui Counties isolation and year-round growing season to field-test these hybrid and genetically engineered (GE) crops.

The onslaught of pesticide-promoting GE crops on the Hawaiian Islands raises three main areas of concern:
Impacts of pesticide exposure on public health
Threats to native biodiversity
Food independence for the people of Hawaii

Companies in Maui County are not required to let the public know the amount of pesticides they use, but data from similar operations on Kauai had revealed record breaking use of Restricted Use Pesticides like chlorpyrifos, a herbicide with known impacts on the development of young children.

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture defers to the federal government on GE and pesticide safety. So far, our state, our Department of Agriculture, our Department of Health, and our Pesticides Branch, have not sufficiently regulated GE agrichemical operations and pesticide spraying in Hawaii. They claim there is no problem with the chemical companies whatsoever, despite the fact that tens of thousands of Hawaii residents have demonstrated since 2013 to stop GE crop testing and spraying. Despite the unanswered concerns of Hawaii residents and millions of people across the world working to stop these agrichemical companies from negatively impacting our human health and environment, our state government regulatory agencies have primarily deferred to the federal government which allows chemical companies like Monsanto and Dow to perform their own safety testing.

The people of Maui County have spoken. We now have a moratorium on GE crops. A moratorium is a period of time when a particular activity is not allowed. In the case of the Maui County initiative, the moratorium places a pause on the propagation, cultivation, growing, and testing of genetically engineered (GE) organisms within the County of Maui until health and environmental safety studies are completed and Health and safety concerns over the production and testing of GE organisms are alleviated.

Monsanto and Dow Chemical spent more than $8 million dollars to try to silence the people of Maui county with their misinformation campaign. Now that the law has passed they are suing Maui County to challenge the new law.
