In Peru, the powerful Romero conglomerate is planning to destroy 43 million acres of the Peruvian Amazon Rain Forest to create palm oil plantations. This equals an area the size of 40% of the state of California. This will have devastating consequences for the environment; for the 23 indigenous tribes that live in this region; and for the global climate. This plan amounts to ecocide as well as genocide.
Mr. President; Please review the Peru United States Trade Promotion Agreement and ask President Ollanta Humala of Peru for an explanation. The United States cannot maintain normal trade relations with a country that is about to sell off the lungs of the planet.
Please urge Mr. Humala to put a stop to this insanity, or face economic sanctions.
