President of Peru, Ollanta Humala: We Can't Drink Oil - Provide Disaster Relief for People of Peruvian Amazon!

Why this is important

What if every drop of water you swallowed was full of toxic, carcinogenic petrochemicals? This nightmare has been the reality for people living along the Corrientes, Pastaza, Tigre, and Marañon Rivers in Loreto, Peru for over 42 years.

Testing showed shocking levels of toxins and heavy metals in the drinking water, surpassing hundreds of times the safe, legal limits. The Peruvian government declared all four rivers to be environmental crisis zones. Yet since the first declaration in March 2013, the government has done nothing to remediate the land or provide humanitarian relief to the affected communities.

Nearly $3 million worth of oil is extracted from these territories every month, and yet the State has not acknowledged the needs of the indigenous people living in this toxic wasteland, violating their basic human right of access to clean water and safe food. The toll this has taken on the health of people of these communities is sick and unconscionable. Children have been born with birth defects, horrific skin rashes are common, and thousands have died prematurely of unknown diseases.

President Ollanta Humala has the power to provide immediate relief to the affected communities. We must stand in solidarity with the people of the four river basins by calling international attention to these blatant violations—of both Peruvian law and basic human rights—and demanding immediate humanitarian relief be delivered until tangible environmental remediation efforts can be effected.
