Ceasefire in Colombia Now!
Clamor S.
started this petition to
Presidente de Colombia, Farc, ELN
In August 2012 the Colombian government and guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, began talks to end the longest-running armed conflict in the world that has lasted more than half a century. This is your opportunity to support peace in Colombia!
Negotiations are taking place but war continues unabated, claiming the lives of countless civilians and soldiers. People who benefit from the war are adding to the prolongation of this humanitarian tragedy. A bilateral ceasefire is urgently needed to save lives and strengthen the Colombian people’s confidence in a non-violent solution to this terrible conflict.
According to the official National Historical Memory Center figures, which underestimate the full extent of atrocities committed in Colombia, in the past 54 years 220,000 people have been murdered, 16,340 have been the victims of targeted assassinations, 1,982 massacres have been perpetrated, 25,007 people have been disappeared, 27,023 kidnapped and 5,712,506 forcibly displaced from their land in the context of this conflict. These figures do not account for the more than seven million Colombians who have left the country to escape the war or seek better opportunities than the country has to offer.
The current negotiations are the first step towards building lasting and meaningful peace.
Sign this petition to urge the Colombian government and FARC guerrillas to establish a bilateral ceasefire NOW! Peace in Colombia will require broad national and international support! Sign to demand that talks with the ELN insurgency also be initiated right away!
Your signature will be one of 1,000,000 to bring together hundreds of Colombian social organizations in a unified Peoples’ Cry for Peace!
