New Zealand Police Commissioner Peter Marshall
For over two years a gang of under aged boys in West Auckland, New Zealand have been sexually assaulting 13 - 15 year old intoxicated girls at parties. A complaint was made to New Zealand Police two yeas ago, but the police didn't press charges and did the usual victim blaming, questioning what the girl was wearing, and forcing her to re-enact the rape scene with dolls. The victim has been doubting herself because of the Police response and has been driven to thoughts of suicide. Many other young girls have been assaulted by this gang who have posted videos and comments on a Facebook page bragging about their conquests. Many of these attacks could have been prevented if the Police had stepped in. The Police are saying they lack evidence, as many of the victims are too scared to come forward. These victims have been made to feel it was their fault by putting themselves in the situation. While sexual abuse cases can be hard to prove where it's one person's word against another, in this instance there have now been four complainants along with social media comments which could have been enough to bring charges. The fact that the two boys are the son of a policeman and the son of actor Anthony Ray Parker, seem to have had a significant impact on the boys lack of conviction.
This is yet another example of how victim blaming can let rapists get away with rape. These boys need to be held accountable for their actions, and to send a clear message to others that there is no place in our society for rape. With enough community support we can encourage other victims to come forward and for the Police to hold these boys responsible for their actions.
