Pacific Heads of Government

For thousands of years, the pacific people have built a strong spiritual and physical connection to our land and seas. Our ancestors were fishermen, navigators and sea faring warriors and stewards of the sea. Experimental Seabed Mining will destroy coastal communities throughout the Pacific; deplete their source of food, income and livelihood.

Despite increasing opposition to this experiment by communities throughout the Pacific, the Government of Papua New Guinea has recently approved the world's first seabed mining experiment.

Marine experts say finite undersea mineral deposits only last 30 months of exploitation; generate a relatively small amount of money to the economy, yet the environmental impact on marine ecosystem is devastating.

Tonga, and Nauru have also issued exploration licenses in international waters and Fiji will soon issue its own seabed-mining license.

There are many unknowns of the effects of Seabed Mining on the marine environment and should be approached with caution!
