COORG is a land with abundant & diversified natural ecosystem, recognised by UNESCO as one of the Biodiversity Hotspots of the world. Kodavas & other original inhabitants of coorg are nature worshippers . The forefathers of Coorg have donated large tracts of their lands in the name of village dieties to be preserved as virgin forests called DEVARA KADU(Sacred grove) . OORUDUVE for the village community use , GOMALA for grazing of cattle & similarly protection for Cauvery River Banks. All these lands are now classified as protected forests & under reserved forest category for the purpose of protection & conservation . There were about 40,000 acres of such lands in Coorg in the year 1904. Today hardly about 7,000 acres are left, due to large scale illegal encroachments with the unholy nexus between migrant encroachers, Politicians & officials of Karnataka Forest Department . In-spite of very rigid forest anti encroachment laws, to prevent & evict any illegal encroachment, these laws have not been implemented due to lack of political will , as these areas are fertile vote banks for politicians from all the major political parties. Now there is a urgent need to implement the law of the land , survey & bifurcate the land, evict all the illegal encroachers & preserve these lands for our posterity.
