Sir Alan Moses, chairman, Independent Press Standards Association
On August 14 the Sun published a hate‐filled and bigoted oped by Trevor Kavanagh. Kavanagh described Muslims as "a specific rather than a cultural problem". He concluded the piece with the question&colon "What will we do about The Muslim Problem then&quest" The phrase, "The Muslim Problem", was printed with capitalisation and italics. It resembles the notorious phrase used by the Nazis in the 1930s, "The Jewish Problem". The Board of Jewish Deputies and Muslim organisations have complained to IPSO about this piece (http&colon//bit.ly/2wbYNNG), as have 107 MPs who have written a letter to IPSO complaining about Kavanagh's use of "Nazi‐like terminology". Kavanagh has no place on the board of an organisation meant to maintain press standards in the UK. His presence on the board undermines the credibility of IPSO and the perception that it is an objective body that is fit for purpose.
